Teaching

Sarah teaches private lessons and workshops, and has joined the continuing education staff at Pierce College where she teaches beginning and intermediate old time fiddling by ear.  She loves helping people find the same joy that she does in playing old time music.  Along with teaching in Puyallup, Sarah also teaches at the Dusty Strings Music School in Seattle

If you are interested in private lessons or workshops, contact Sarah at fiddleteacher@hotmail.com, or if group learning is more your style, Pierce County students can check out Pierce College's continuing education department online  (or give them a call at  (253) 840-8452 and ask about the American fiddle class) and King County students should contact Dusty Strings .

You can also check out the free tune of the month video series for tunes, tips and techniques.

What Sarah's Private Students are Saying...

"I have been a musician for 45 years, have played clarinet in various bands and orchestras and am an African drumming teacher. I am a beginner/intermediate fiddle player and Sarah is my teacher. Sarah is an encyclopedia of musical knowledge from theory, to bowing techniques, fiddling styles, histories of various tunes and an amazing array of memorized tunes from all genres. Her teaching style is relaxed, fun and I come away each week with a notebook full of information, tunes to practice and embellishments for each tune. Her love of fiddling is apparent and this is what drew me to her. Her method of teaching tunes by ear is methodical and easy to follow. I would highly recommend her to people of all ages from children to older adults." -------- Margie Pasero

"Sarah teaches great fun songs, and it's very fun to learn from her." ----
Chase, age 10

"Sarah is a GREAT teacher!! I've been taking lessons for a great while, and she knows a wide variety of tunes and teaches at a nice, easy pace."---
Alex C.

"I have a 6 yr. old who has been fiddling for a few months and a 10 yr. old who is in her 2nd year. Sarah is encouraging and flexible with both. She knows how to keep my oldest challenged yet not overwhelmed, and my youngest engaged and interested. She is an accomplished fiddler and both of my kids really enjoy their time with her." ------
Christine O.

" I have been taking fiddle lessons from Sarah Comer for over a year and I am very pleased with the experience and the results. I am a self-conscious adult beginner and not very disciplined. Sarah's instruction targets where I'm at musically and at the same time manages to broaden my understanding of music in general. Sarah finds music that matches my skill level with my musical tastes. With Sarah's encouragement, I find that I take my fiddling more seriously and that my musical goals are more ambitious." ----

Statements from Sarah's Beginning Students at Pierce College

"I loved Sarah's beginning fiddle class. She makes you feel like you can learn how to play the fiddle. Then, immediately, you are learning how to play some songs. She has a great sense of humor and she makes the class fun!"---
Carrie F.

"Sarah is very good at connecting with the adult beginner. Her relaxed and unique teaching style helps her students to relax and focus. Sarah not only shares her knowledge and experience with her students, she also shares the fun of playing the fiddle!"---Marleen Boucher
